MPlay overview

MPlay was originally designed as an MP3 audio player, but it now supports many different audio formats. It has many features that you've come to expect in MP3 players, including playlists, skins, easy operation and lots of special features. Among the special features is the Audio Track Mixer. This function permits the mixing of two tracks (enabling DJ-like mixes) made possible with MPLAY's two separate playback engines.

What’s new in version 1.9

Version 1.9:
  • MPLAY is now freeware!
  • MPLAY has been distributed as shareware with an optional registration fee to unlock additional features.
  • In order to celebrate the long life of MPLAY (more than 12 years!) the application now becomes freeware again, as in the early beginning a long, long time ago. This means all features are unlocked from start. Just download and play!

IIRC, I used this over a decade ago, and probably made some skins and used ResEdit to customize MPlay. Although the interface is rather plain, this customization (or using the currently downloadable skins) is something that was attractive to Mac users. Eventually I bought SoundJam (currently iTunes), Audion (the best), and Unsanity Echo (promising but discontinued when they focused on haxies). While there are alternatives that I use like Vox, VLC, and others, MPLay has these (subjective) advantages; interface and mixer. On the downside, opening the Trackmixer increases CPU usage considerably. Apparently there's no manual. When the player is stopped Quick Reference is available under the Tools menu and can be launched as a separate application. This looks and feels dated, but still is a fairly good mp3 player for people looking for something different, particularly the mixer feature. It's not something I would purchase, but can't complain with the current price.

great app. beats whamb since it can plac aac's, i like the bpm and tone tweaks. my only gripe - shame you can't have 2 playlist windows open at the same time (like in whamb) to 'cut' from one to the other quickly.
